Neu! 75 is the third studio album by the krautrock band Neu!. It was recorded and mixed at Conny Plank's studio between December 1974 and January 1975. It was released in 1975 by Brain Records, and officially reissued on CD on 29 May 2001 by Astralwerks in the US and by Grönland Records in the UK. This album saw Neu! regroup after a few years' break, during which time Michael Rother had worked together with Cluster in the krautrock supergroup Harmonia.
Neu! 75 is the third studio album from German Krautrock legends Neu! Ive only been partially impressed with their first two albums which is mostly due to the tracks that IMO, are more sound experiements than real songs. Its an aquired taste if you enjoy those avant garde experiements but Im one of those that dont. On the other hand there were some really great songs on those albums too with relentless driving krautrock beats and psychadelic elements. An album with two faces from a band with the creative imagination of 20 others. It's not the most consistent listening but the recommended album to get an idea of what Neu! is all about.
Isi," which opens the album, features Dinger's metronymic percussion holding down the 2/4 rhythm and a trademark one-note bassline provided by a piano, but the gorgeous sonic washes and flourishes normally handled by Rother's guitar-slinging hands are now painted with a synth. Seeland" offers a return to the six strings with what would in subsequent years become Rother's ornate "singing" style of playing.
If the first two tracks were somewhat ambivalent about the preference for ambience over trajectory, "Leb Wohl" resolves all doubts. Over nine minutes, the track blends plaintive piano, metronomic percussion, distant organ, and tidal washes beneath Dinger's almost-spoken vocals. E-Musik" has perfected the equation: the acid-fried expanse of their debut distilled through the radical proto-punk of their second album, and punctuated by spells of dreamy ambience. All that remains is the primal shove of "After Eight," perhaps the grittiest and meanest sounding track the duo ever put its name on. Instead of a victory lap, Neu throttled into overdrive. And finally, breakdown. The world was catching up just as the engine blew out.
