Terror Twilight is the fifth and final studio album by American indie rock band Pavement, released on June 8, 1999 on Matador Records in the US and Domino Recording Company in the UK. It was produced by Nigel Godrich. Pavement hired British producer Nigel Godrich, who had produced Radiohead and Beck, to produce their fifth album. According to songwriter Stephen Malkmus, Godrich was a fan of the band and offered to produce with no fee, asking only for royalties

On an album-by-album basis, Pavement tended to alternate between clamor and clarity. Terror Twilight, however, wound up pulling them in both directions at once. Depending on your vantage, it is either the band’s most polished, pop-friendly album or their darkest, most volatile one-laid-back in the classic West-coast Pavement style, yet atypically on edge at the same time. But Terror Twilight is the sort of counterintuitive album where the most melodically intricate songs feel so effortless, yet the slapdash irreverence that once came so naturally to Pavement feels more forced

That's typical of Terror Twilight - it's reflective, with the occasional flight of fancy that fits neatly into the laid-back flow. It's also the tightest record Pavement ever made, largely due to producer Nigel Godrich, who helped reign in excessive tendencies in Radiohead and Beck and does the same here. The band still sounds like Pavement - their loping interplay is unmistakable - and Stephen Malkmus' songs are typically dense and literate, yet they're easier to digest.

Terror Twilight was a massive statement and still is. And I’ll go so far as to say as it’s Pavement at their finest. Never has the band shown so much restraint and contentment, but Pavement sounded tighter and more daring than they ever have. It takes a lot of guts to release such a relaxed, emotional album like Terror Twilight after the utter spastic nature of Slanted and Enchanted. But they did it here. And no song on Terror Twilight showcases Pavement being more daring than the album’s centerpiece, Major Leagues
