West Meets East: The Historic Shankar/Menuhin Sessions collects the best from Ravi Shankar and Yehudi Menuhin's three West Meets East albums (originally released in 1967, 1968, and 1976). This compilation features "Prabhati" and "Swara-Kakali" from the first album, "Raga Piloo" and "Dhun" from the second, and "Tenderness" and "Twilight Mood" from the third.
Without renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin, the West may not have found Indian classical music until decades later, much beyond the late 1960s. Thanks to Menuhin's chance meeting and later lasting friendship with the master sitarist Ravi Shankar, the West witnessed the sublimity that the merging of Western and Indian classical music could produce. The two collaborated in key performances during the late 1960s and mid-1970s, the highlights of which are captured here on West Meets East. The musical gods were certainly present during these varied sessions. The restored audio is "airy" but lovingly executed. If you are an admirer of either musician, this recording will reward bountifully!

It was recorded following their successful duet in June 1966 at the Bath Musical Festival, where they had played some of the same material. The album was issued in America on EMI's Angel Records imprint in June 1967.

Ravi Shankar (IPA: ; 7 April 1920 – 11 December 2012), born Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury, his name often preceded by the title Pandit, was an Indian musician and composer who was one of the best-known exponents of the sitar in the second half of the 20th century as a composer of Hindustani classical music. Shankar was born to a Bengali family in Benares, British India, and spent his youth touring India and Europe with the dance group of his brother Uday Shankar. He gave up dancing in 1938 to study sitar playing under court musician Allauddin Khan
West Meets East Yehudi Menuhin (feat. Ravi Shankar & Hephzibah Menuhin). Label: Warner Classics. The Menuhin Century commemorates the 100th anniversary of his birth on 22 April 1916. Comprising of various recordings, The Menuhin Century draws on the unequalled 70-year relationship between the violinist and the record company HMV/EMI. That collaboration produced a total of some 300 discs, which are now part of Warner Classics’ unrivalled catalogue. While The Menuhin Century is impressively extensive, spanning the 53 years from 1929 to 1998, it does not aim for completeness; rather, its particular focus is on the violinist’s landmark interpretations and on recordings never before released,.
