Album · 2013 · 58 Songs. Egmont, Op. 84: Overture. Vienna Philharmonic & Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt. 2. Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major, Op. 15: I. Allegro con brio. Vienna Philharmonic, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt & Wilhelm Backhaus. 3. 15: II. Largo.

Beethoven: sserstedt. In the main, the symphonies are superbly played, benefiting from the Vienna Philharmonic’s perpetually singing tone quality from the string section, characterfully inflected woodwinds, and broad, comfy brass sonorities.

Klemperer is similar to Bohm/Vienna Philharmonic (DG), or ienna Philharmonic (Decca), for those who have heard their recordings. Beethoven 8 in Klemperer's hands is also big and bold, but light and graceful where the music calls for it. I found Klemperer's Philharmonia Beethoven 8 a delight, as well. 5-8) and even more Scherchen (Beethoven: Complete Symphonies, Vol. 2, Symphonies Nos. 5-8) brought to it, but nonetheless powerful and impressive in its own right. The first movement of the 5th moves at a very pedestrian pace, but HMV's superb 1957 sonics, the sheer impact of the orchestral sound and Klemper's ability to keep the articulation snappy lends it great power.

Backhaus would make stereo recordings of all five concertos with Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt and Vienna Philharmonic in the late 1950s. In March 1927 Ignaz Friedman recorded the Emperor Concerto with the New Queen's Hall Orchestra under Henry Wood, but this recording no longer exists. In the early 1930s Artur Schnabel recorded all five Beethoven concertos under Sir Malcolm Sargent and the London Symphony Orchestra. Edwin Fischer recorded it with Karl Böhm in 1939 and Wilhelm Furtwängler in 1951. In 2012, the Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes recorded all five of Beethoven's piano concertos in the album "the Beethoven Journey", with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. The original autograph (page 74r) has Adagio un poco moto ("Adagio with a little motion"), not mosso.
