The Hurting is the debut studio album by the British band Tears for Fears. It was released on 7 March 1983, and peaked at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart in its second week of release. The album was certified Gold by the BPI within three weeks of release, and reached Platinum status in January 1985.

The Hurting is the debut album by the British new wave band Tears for Fears. 1 on the UK Album Chart. The album contains Tears For Fears' first three hit singles – Mad World, Change, and Pale Shelter – all of which reached the Top 5 in the UK. It also contains a new version of the band’s first single, Suffer The Children, which had originally been released in 1981

The Hurting would be Tears for Fears’ most collaborative effort. Curt and Roland nearly equal each other in the lead vocal department with the opening title track featuring both as the frontmen. With each progressive album, TFF would become more and more Roland’s brainchild as he agonized over every nuance and dominated the microphone. I am hard pressed to think of any other band that featured one singer on every successful pop single, with resulting albums favoring the & singer.

Listening to The Hurting three decades later, Tears For Fears’ obvious confidence in their work continues to shine. Tears were more of an intellectual, moody proposition. I was allowed to sign them on a two single deal, with an option for an album, which means I had to succeed in the charts with the singles before being allowed to carry on and make an album. I released ‘Suffer The Children’, and John Peel picked up on it and compared them to Joy Division.

With a comprehensive look at the beginnings of Tears For Fears, the liner notes also dive into the origins of The Hurting and plenty of quotes about the album directly from Roland and Curt themselves. Finally, written and organized by Paul Sinclair, this is a wonderful glimpse into the history of Tears For Fears. The magic of the album is captured perfectly in this package paying homage to one of new wave music’s biggest bands

Tears For Fears is one of my favourite bands and their debut album, "The Hurting", has a very powerful impact. If you can't believe me, just listen to the lyrics in this album  . 6 people found this helpful.

Tears for Fears’ second album is the one sound of pop-rock in the ’80s. But where Lennon went small, Tears for Fears went huge. They took the goth and synth-pop foundation they constructed on their debut, 1983’s The Hurting, and piled on saxophone, Fairlights, guitar solos, samplers, and live drums on top of drum machines. They wrote cresting choruses, arena-ready anthems, elegant ballads, and multi-section songs that have more in common with prog-rock than most of new wave.
