Or when they name their first full-length album after a book by Kierkegaard. These are not usually promising signs; they usually portend extremely long songs that will go no place in particular and will tell you far more than you ever wanted to know about the deep inner workings of the twenty-something singer's soul. For In Praise of Folly, though, the whole nd-philosophy thing works pretty well

The band has a complex sound without a hint of false ambition or condescension to the more noise-appreciative semi-mainstream. Influences seem to range from the nal such as Tim Kasher and Cursive on the achingly hypnotic "Beliefs Otherwise" and the honestly just aching "Affluenza" (the latter one of the more conventional but still electric songs the band has ever recorded) to almost glam-punk a la Be Bop Deluxe on the r-laced "Misplaced.

The Praise of Folly has long been famous as the best-known work of the greatest of the Renaissance humanists, Erasmus of Rotterdam. It is a fantasy which starts off as a learned frivolity but turns into a full-scale ironic encomium after the manner of the Greek satirist Lucian, the first and in its way the finest example of a new form of Renaissance satire. The present translation first appeared in 1971 and was updated for the Toronto Collected Works of Erasmus (1986), and it has been followed by the translations of Clarence H. Miller (1979) and Robert M. Adams (1989).

In Praise of Folly, also translated as The Praise of Folly, is an essay written in Latin in 1509 by Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam and first printed in June 1511. Inspired by previous works of the Italian humanist Faustino Perisauli De Triumpho Stultitiae, it is a satirical attack on superstitions and other traditions of European society as well as on the Western Church.
