The Strange Idols Pattern and Other Short Stories is the third album by English alternative rock band Felt, released in 1984 and produced by John Leckie. The album marked a departure from the introspective, guitar-led sound of their first two albums, with Lawrence's vocals becoming much more dominant in the mix along with a greater emphasis on pop melodies. The album also introduced a traditional drum kit to the band's sound, having previously relied on tom drums in the past.

Felt was the project of Britain's enigmatic Lawrence Hayward, a singer/songwriter who transformed his long-standing obsession with the music of Tom Verlaine and Television into an impressive catalog of minimalist pop gems and, ultimately, cult stardom. The first Felt single, "Index," was produced by Hayward alone in his bedroom on a portable cassette player; released in 1979, its primitive, impressionistic sound stood in stark contrast to the sleek solemnity of the new wave (as did Hayward's much-discussed "new puritan" stance, a rejection of alcohol, smoking and. Mayo Thompson produced 1987's Poem of the River EP, while Guthrie returned to man the spartan mini-album The Final Resting of the Ark.

The sheer beauty of tracks like "Spanish house" and "Sunlight Bathed the Golden Glow" is both revelatory and cathartic! This is such an incredible album! Best re-issue ever!

Sounds brilliant, but be prepared for the flimsiest sleeve/"gatefold" you've encountered.
Kecq
The lot of us didn't even notice it was a gatefold until someone told us to look closer. Haha.

Nevermind the crappy gatefold, these reissues sound brilliant. I don't think Lawrence and Deebank's tunes have ever sounded better. Full stop.

I played one of mine last night and I completely agree! These reissues sound very good and the pressing quality is excellent. I think they may have been pressed at Optimal? My records came in the generic U shaped Japanese anti static type inner sleeve which is a welcome departure from the printed card variety. These reissues are very good to the extent that I think we can forgive Cherry Red for the flimsy sleeves/jackets?

I'm confused. On the Cherry Red site it has them as gatefold covers but the one I just picked up at Amoeba here in the states isn't gatefold. Does anyone know what's up?
Weiehan
No idea; mine's not gatefold in any sense of the word, either. Bought at my local shop and probably came from Alliance Distribution.

I think that is just like what what the other two replies say. These sleeves are so flimsy, lightweight and skimpy, that you do not notice that they are gatefolds, particularly if you retain the shrink wrapping. I have cleaned my copies of 'Crumbling ..' and 'The Strange Idols ..' but haven't played them yet. The pressings looks very clean.

I just purchased my copy at a record store in the U.S. I can confirm that this is indeed a gatefold. I had to look closely for I did not remove the shrink upon opening it. It sounds terrific! I cannot detect any significant warping if any at all. No record is ever going to be perfectly flat but this looks excellent to me! I put on headphones to try and discern any pops or surface noise. Sounds like a new record should. Looks like they took time and care with this reissue. Well worth the retail price!

The one I had delivered last week, here in the UK, is definitely a gatefold (although you might miss that fact if you dont remove the outer plastic shrink wrap - it's a very very slim gatefold).
