Leoš Janáček's String Quartet No. 2, "Intimate Letters", was written in 1928. It has been referred to as Janáček's "manifesto on love". The "Intimate Letters" quartet was the second to be composed after a request from the Bohemian Quartet who, in 1923, requested Janáček to compose two string quartets for them.
For a couple of decades now, the Emersons have been strutting their stuff close to the top of the tree as far as international string quartets go, recording a good proportion of their repertoire in the process. But until now they have never tackled the two quartets by Janáček that rank among the greatest of the 20th century. The performances here have the sovereign control and the perfect weighting of each line in the musical argument that are the group's trademarks. What they lack, though is the dimension of intimacy that is so important in this music - some of the most personal Janáček.
The Third String Quartet by Martinu reflects the influences of his teacher Roussel as well as the night-life ragtime and jazz world of Paris in which it was written, in 1929. By far the shortest of his seven mature quartets, it yet gives a greater degree of independence to each of the four instruments, allowing for some striking harmonic clashes and colourful scoring. HighRes-Studio Master files are lossless at various sample rates from 4. kHz up to 384 kHz or 1-bit (. 224 MHz) for DSD. Studio Master: FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec).
The Doric String Quartet, recognized as one of the finest young ensembles in the world, pays homage to Czech chamber music of the 1920s with these string quartets by Janáček and Martinů. As acknowledged by Janáček himself, his two string programmatic quartets are a vehicle for his deepest feelings. Martinů’s String Quartet No. 3 reflects the influences of his teacher Albert Roussel as well as the nightlife ragtime and jazz world of late 1920s Paris, where and when it was written. The work itself features some striking harmonic clashes and colourful scoring. 96 kHz, 24-bit PCM – Chandos Studio.
Janáček: String Quartets Nos. 1 & 2 - Martinů: String Quartet No. "Please retry". Leo Janácek s String Quartet N. (1923) was inspired by Tolstoy's novella The Kreutzer Sonata(censored on its 1889 publication by the Russian authorities), which presents a dominated then adulterous married woman and her murder by the husband. It is also an analysis of human love, seen from the female side; something that Janácek sympathised with. And from the opening bars of his piece it's clear that the members of the Doric Quartet are presenting a drama living and breathing every second of it vividly essayed with many extreme contrasts.
