so, nearly 3 years on, what do we think? Personally, i think only Bilocation and Levitate For You are worthy of the Leftfield name - these 2 tracks could exist happily on either of the previous albums.
Zut
There's enough pop shite being produced already. I just can't believe Leftfield would sink to that standard... I would have given a 0 star review if I could.
Saberblade
Given Leftfields sixteen year hiatus and Paul Daleys departure from the project, this album is a different take on the Leftfield sound. "Alternative Light Source" iilluminates the project from a completely new angle. It's a mighty and fabulous album with a slight pop patina, great production and apparent knowledge of its roots. Not a stone-cold future classic, but a solid and self-conscious comeback all the way.Why petrify the good old times in memory amber? Open your ears and listen to Leftfield tearing EDM a new one.
Bralore
A strange one to comment /review on really.. This album has it all, great potential and a few stand out tracks.. BUT just when you think there's something deep and interesting ..there's just that bit of cheese and commercialism which let's it down..obviously "leftisim" set the mark..but it's been a gradual downhill slide from there
Puchock
We should be thankful after all! I mean, 16 years ago, we were almost sure that "Rhythm and Stealth" would be the very last we'd hear of this amazing (then-)duo for all times to come. And now...lo' and behold...a new album! Albeit without Daley, the Leftfield flame has been rekindled again, and that is good!
Wild Python
Dang, what incredible negativity in the reviews here. Ouch. It's true, Daley's presence is missed. It's not the same. Not at all. But why would we expect it to be? And who really wants Leftism 2015? Or Rhythm & Stealth -- Leftfield's best album -- which it shares more in common with, but can't be repeated? We live in a different world now. Daley and Barnes were headed in this more austere direction for some time. Yet it's not an obvious comeback for those who yearn for the heady optimism of the '90s. This sounds like Barnes a bit unhinged, a man who has absorbed the aftereffects of 9/11, and global economic meltdown, European government cutbacks, you name it. At times he dives right into the dissonance. Personally, I too would have preferred more of the ragga and dub we got with the first two albums. But it's not a bad thing that Barnes has moved into very dark, minimal, moody territory on Alternative Light Source. It is more repetitive than I would have thought, or wanted, as a result. Some of the vocals seem like odd choices, at first contact. But as always, play it loud and it is MENTAL. Sometimes artists need to go into the belly of the beast to come out the other side. Like The Black Dog (Ken Downie), who was also written off after Plaid left -- left to die by many -- he returned with some less rousing albums at first. But after finding a groove, subsequent albums have revealed a renaissance. I believe in giving great artists a chance to bounce back on their own terms. ALS would be considered a solid album by most artists. It grows with more listens after the shock of the new. I hope Barnes keeps at it despite the cold. Remember, Barnes did the original "Not Forgotten" without Daley, and it's still the best thing ever recorded under the Leftfield name. So let's give him a chance to bring back the eternal light, once he's purged more of the poison of our time.
Marelyne
Well, that's what you get without Daley.
Diredefender
Can't fault the production but overall feeling is it could have been better, saying that though, after the 16 year wait we should be thankful that we actually have a 'new' Leftfield release :)
Ieslyaenn
Album seriously missing Daley's input.. not even close to the first two...soup is the word that comes to mind
HyderCraft
Impossible to top the first two albums, but coming back to it 16 years later and it still is a great album. Universal Everything, Alternative Light Source and Shaker Obsession are standout tracks.
