It's rather hard to get a handle on this phase of Robinson's career - there's some reasonably lowdown blues with the guitarist speaking the lyrics as much as singing them here, but he was mainly a jazz musician by then.

In a career spanning 50 years, the guitarist Freddy Robinson, who has died of cancer aged 70, played with Ray Charles, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and dozens of lesser-known artists in blues and R&B. Thanks to an early exposure to jazz, he graduated from the ranks of "ear" players to more sophisticated musical company, but he retained an. affection for his past and a pride in his early work  . At the Drive-In and Off the Cuff were attractive albums that might have drawn more attention had Stax not gone out of business, leaving a third album unreleased for 25 years. In 1975 Robinson embraced the Nation of Islam.

Freddy Robinson (guitar, electric) - 1939 - 2009 :: Abu Talib (born as Fred Leroy Robinson and previously known as Freddie or Freddy Robinson; was an African American blues and jazz guitarist, singer, and harmonica player. Freddy converted to Islam in 1975 and changed his name to Abu Talib. In the early 1970s, he worked with English blues bandleader John Mayall, playing on the album Jazz Blues Fusion, and recorded LPs with trumpeter Blue Mitchell. He also recorded two albums in his own name - At The Drive In and Off The Cuff, on which he was supported by Joe Sample and Wilton Felder of the Crusaders - for Enterprise, a subsidiary of Stax Records. He also worked with Earl Gaines and Jimmy Rogers in the 1950s and 1960s, Monk Higgins and Stanley Turrentine in the 1970s, and Bobby Bland in the 1980s.

Freddy Robinson (Freddie Robinson, Abu Talib, Feb 24, 1939 - Oct 8, 2009). Freddy or Freddie (it is spelled both ways on the album covers) Robinson's trek from Mississippi to Arkansas, Los Angeles, Chicago and Memphis before becoming a Muslim and changing his name to Abu Talib is well documented. Though he did not entirely drop out of the music business, he did lapse into obscurity. Half of these sessions, originally from the LPs At the Drive-In and Off the Cuff for the Stax affiliate Enterprise label, were ostensibly his swan songs  . Tracklist: 01. Bluesology 02.
