And on his third release, The Gifted, R&B returns that love. Stokley Williams of Mint Condition injects soul into five of The Gifted’s most impressive tracks, giving Wale a soulful backdrop as he tackles various aspects of American life. It’s not just trap cliches and tales of opulence, it’s topical music all of Wale’s listeners can relate to. Stokley’s gentle finger snaps fuel LoveHate Thing and alluring vocals invigorate Sunshine and Black Heroes. But don’t worry, even with Stokley’s involvement, Wale is truly the star of the show. Well, most of the time

On The Gifted, he aims to take another leap in his career with a demonstration of the genre he calls New Black Soul. Throughout the album, Wale embraces live instrumentation by pulling sounds that explore his eclectic tastes. LoveHate Thing combines funky guitars and handclaps, indicative of contemplative soul. Elsewhere, he returns to his . roots, where brass horns and chimes are classic Go-Go. Despite the various influences, the musical experience doesn’t sound forced, and there's room for inspirational tunes like Heaven’s Afternoon and 88. The latter is based off Michael Jordan’s illustrious career and sneaker culture. The Gifted also serves as a platform for some of Wale’s most introspective tracks to date. He takes jabs at the media's sensationalism in Gullible, and tackles the subject of Jesus pieces in Golden Salvation.

The similar album opener, "The Curse of the Gifted," falls a little flat, he sounds oddly disinterested in his own song, but that’s not a problem on album standout "Heaven’s Afternoon. With MMG’s Meek Mill riding shotgun, this is some of that classic dope rhymes over a dope soul sample hip-hop lovers won’t be able to avoid. Throw "88" into this group and you've got a solid albu. but Wale didn’t stop there.
